Epidemiology, Monitoring and Modelling

The thematic area dedicated to Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Modelling (EPI-MOD) focuses on the collection, integration, and quantitative analysis of scientific data to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the spread of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases with epidemic potential, transforming data into actionable knowledge for public health.

Activities within this thematic area are primarily organized into three main areas:

  • Integrated One Health Approach: investigation of infectious disease dynamics through an interdisciplinary perspective that integrates human, animal, and environmental health. This approach enables the integration of entomological and veterinary surveillance networks with human clinical data, providing a comprehensive framework for monitoring infectious threats.
  • Mathematical and Predictive Modelling: development of advanced mathematical and statistical models to simulate the progression of infectious disease outbreaks. These tools support the analysis of pathogen epidemiology, the identification of risk factors, and the prediction of disease transmission patterns across different geographical settings.
  • Surveillance Networks and Data Integration: establishment of interdisciplinary scientific networks that bring together field-based data producers—including experts in human and animal disease surveillance—and quantitative analysts. By centralizing and integrating heterogeneous datasets, this thematic area overcomes sectoral data fragmentation, enhancing the timely interpretation of infectious threats and strengthening preparedness and response to emerging global health challenges.
