Post-transplant infections. The Salerno Department of Medicine plays a central role in the €2.5 million SEPSOT-CODE project

The Baronissi Campus of the University of Salerno’s Faculty of Medicine, Surgery, and Dentistry will host the kickoff meeting for SEPSOT-CODE. The project has been funded with approximately 2.5 million euros by the PNRR INF-ACT Extended Partnership, with the University of Insubria in Varese serving as the lead institution under the scientific direction of Professor Nicasio Mancini. This event marks the beginning of a collaboration involving several clinical and research partners nationwide.

"The integration of expertise represents a key strength and an essential element for effectively responding to infections. Through this project, the PNRR INF-ACT Extended Partnership will be able to integrate new clinical and research institutes, combining laboratory investigations with artificial intelligence technologies to monitor infections and sepsis risk associated with organ transplants," stated Federico Forneris, President of the INF-ACT Foundation.

The SEPSOT-CODE project is getting underway thanks to the commitment of Professors Gianluigi Franci and Pasquale Pagliano, scientific leads for UNISA. The proceedings, held in the Graduation Hall of the Medical Campus, will be introduced by Vice-Rector Professor Carmine Vecchione and the Head of UNISA’s Department of Medicine, Professor Annibale Alessandro Puca. During the kickoff meeting, experts from various clinical and research institutions will gather to discuss the initial operational phases of the project. The goal is to pool the expertise of the various partners to tackle organ transplant-related infections in an innovative and integrated manner, leveraging cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence.

The event is an important opportunity to consolidate synergies among participants and plan future activities, culminating in the design of an algorithm for the rapid prediction and diagnosis of sepsis in solid organ transplant patients. It will also be a crucial moment for defining intervention strategies and operational procedures for collecting and analyzing clinical and laboratory data.

In addition to the University of Salerno, the PNRR INF-ACT Extended Partnership involves leading national institutions such as the University of Insubria (Varese), the ASST Grande Ospedale Metropolitano Niguarda (Milan), the Pisa University Hospital, the University of Trieste, the "Antonio Cardarelli" Hospital of National Relevance (Naples), as well as two companies: Alpha IVD S.p.A. and the Health Genomics Research Center (CRGS). This collaborative network aims to create a centralized database to enable the prompt identification and management of infectious complications in transplant patients. The kickoff meeting on July 17 will therefore be a milestone for all partners involved, marking a fundamental step toward the project's success and the implementation of its technological and clinical innovations—bringing our region to the forefront of advanced international research.
